In1831, when Charles Darwin joins Robert FitzRoy's HMS Beagle for afive-year voyage, the budding naturalist is a 22-year-old unknown,while the Captain is at 26 one of the brightest stars of the RoyalNavy, a descendant of Charles II. By 1865, Darwin is world famous, andFitzRoy is a bitter footnote of history, known only for his role inaiding Darwin's earth-shaking observations. This is the story of thesetwo men as their faith, ideas, and reputations clash, meld, and fightfor supremacy. The book is an intimate chronicle of her family?s history as pioneers of social justice, and the ruinous price her father paid for their achievements. As the nation moves toward majority-minority status, can we transcend race and ethnicity and should we try? Gaiman's visit is funded in part by a grant from the Southern Arts Federation in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the Alabama State Council on the Arts.
