The Myth of Martyrdom - What Really Drives Suicidal Killers
Date: Tuesday, January 22, 2013
Time: 04:00 PM - 05:30 AM
Location: 205 Gorgas Library
Cost: Free
Categories: Lectures and Speakers, Workshops and Seminars
Dr. Adam Lankford, a UA criminal justice professor, discusses his new book The Myth of Martyrdom: What Really Drives Suicide Bombers, Rampage Shooters, and Other Self-Destructive Killers, which offers unprecedented evidence that many suicide terrorists are suicidal, in the clinical sense, and are not simply driven by ideology or commitment to the cause. This directly contradicts what most experts have insisted for decades, and suggests that there are underlying psychological similarities between suicide bombers and suicidal rampage shooters.
Dr. Lankford has written for The New York Times, Foreign Policy, Wired, The Daily Beast, The Huffington Post, and numerous peer-reviewed journals. His research has been featured by CNN, MSNBC, NPR, BBC World Radio, CBS Radio, The Boston Globe, and many other national and international outlets.
The event is free, open to the public, and will include a short discussion, Q&A, and a book signing.
