Dr. Jorge Ortiz-Sotelo will give a lecture,"Defeating the Shining Path: A Lesson in Combating Terrorism in Peru" on Tuesday, February 26, at 3 p.m. in Room 205 of Gorgas Library.
Dr. Ortiz-Sotelo was Peruvian Marine who participated in military actions against the infamous terrorists/guerrillas "Sendero Luminoso." His eyewitness comments and reflections on this subject will be of interest to UA students, faculty, and some members of the Tuscaloosa public.
After retiring from the Peruvian Navy, he continued on his career as a naval and maritime historian of Peru and Latin America, earning his Ph.D. from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. He has published more than a dozen books, and scores of articles, on his various specialties and in 2009-2011 held a chaired professorship at the United States Naval Academy. Over the years he has held numerous posts in Peru, directing think tanks and acting in international diplomacy.
