Identity Lessons Exhibition at the Paul R. Jones Gallery

Time: All Day Event
Location: Paul R. Jones Gallery
Categories: Arts, College of Arts & Sciences
The Paul R. Jones Gallery of Art in downtown Tuscaloosa will unveil its next exhibit, "Identity Lessons" on December 3, 2012. It will showcase works from the Paul R. Jones Collection of American Art, which is managed by the Department of Art and Art History in The University of Alabama's College of Arts and Sciences. The exhibit will be on display until December 17, 2012. An Opening Reception will be held at the Paul R. Jones Gallery on Thursday, December 6, 2012 from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.
The exhibition, curated by students enrolled in the "Introduction to Fine Arts" course sets a unique precedent for student involvement with the Paul R. Jones Collection of American Art. With 200 students participating, most of the curation activity was facilitated by online interactions, including the use of discussion boards, surveys, and document sharing.
Initially, the students were divided up into groups of 10-12 individuals and each group was asked to investigate works in the collection and then, around these works, shape an exhibition. Each group then devised a curatorial statement and each statement from each group was then collaboratively evaluated (electronically) by the class in order to choose the two most successful proposals. The exhibition "Identity Lessons" reflects the two winning curatorial statements.
The Paul R. Jones Gallery is located at 2308 6th Street in downtown Tuscaloosa. Gallery hours are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Thursday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.
